Fig. 12: The creative process according to Big Bird. 55 Principles Throughout this book, the idea of process is constantly emphasized and sometimes, in wanting to explain something, I invent, or expand my idea through use of a visual metaphor or analogy. Some of these are more successful than others: some are instantly comprehensible to the whole group; some work for a few students and leave others cold; some are not ‘quite there’ but in the presenting of them, an understanding is gained. This is why there are so many creative writers quoted in this book, because their skill in writing can shed new perspectives on the subjects being studied. Many of these writers were also very knowledgeable about the visual or performing arts and their writings are energetic and stimulating. It will not always be easy – but good writing makes you want to unknot the ideas and try to find the layers alluded to. Good writing can be transparent, translucent, dense, layered, fragile, deeply crafted, questioning, light or fleeting.
