There are legitimate debates of a theoretical, methodological, and substantive order. We have chosen to begin with a broad conceptualization, introducing refinements and specifications within four broadly constructed classes. As suggested, the problem is, in part, one of levels of abstraction. At the highest level of abstraction there are only two great "classes" within capitalism, capital and labour, with capital seeking to appropriate the value that only labour can produce. At a more intermediary level of analysis (and the one we have chosen to enter), there are four major classes that appear within industrial capitalism.

On these matters there is considerable division of opinion. On the one hand, a whole generation of "new class" theories have emphasized the intensification of the knowledge-skill-credentials component of postindustrial labour markets. The revolution of the forces of production has diminished the importance of brute manual labour and intensified the importance of the ability to apply abstract knowledge to deal with concrete problems. The emphasis differs: for Daniel Bell the issue is control over scientific knowledge; for Alvin Gouldner, the control of culture.

24 But they are decidedly less useful when the purpose is to study production relations themselves. While typologies have the advantage of reducing complexity, they also obscure the underlying components that go into their construction. The reason is that all such typologies are based on theoretical choices to privilege some production relations over others or on the particular way in which a subset of production relations intersect. Some members of the new middle class have administrative duties, while others are mainly responsible for the control of labour.
